The small town of Hermanus, a short ride up the coast from Cape Town, is known as the land based whale watching capital of the world.
You will have the opportunity either to watch the whales from the coastline, or take a boat out into the ocean. This is a seasonal tour, and runs while the whales are in town, generally from about the end of June until the end of September, beginning of October.
There is a very unique path that hugs the coastline, and runs from one side of town to the other. About 12 kilometres (about 7 1/2 miles) long, the path provides whale watchers an opportunity to get as close at 20 metres from the gentle giants as they relax in the coves or swim around beyond the breakers.
If you prefer you can instead take a whale watching boat from the picturesque little harbour. The boats are generally allowed to get within about 50 metres of the whales. They then cut their engines and wait for the inquisitive creatures to approach the craft. Boats are allowed to remain next to the whales for 20 minutes.
We offer a picnic or sack lunch on the tour, which lasts all day. You will be picked up at about 7.30 a.m., and be dropped off back at your hotel at about 5 p.m.
This tour costs $845 per person, including VAT.
